Looking for Books Like Fourth Wing? Try These

So You’ve Read Fourth Wing And Now You’re Thinking “What’s Next?”

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is arguably one of the most popular romantasy books of the last few years. There’s just something about an enemies-to-lovers storyline in a war college setting filled with dragons that just does something for readers. If you absolutely loved Fourth Wing — especially the dragons — here are a few more “dragon-y” books that are like Fourth Wing.

1. Iron Flame & Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

Okay, this might be an easy option for books that are like Fourth Wing, however, there are more books in The Empyrean series (aka Fourth Wing.) If you didn’t know the sequel — Iron Flame — was published in 2023 and it picks up right where Fourth Wing ended. I personally haven't read Iron Flame but I have heard that the ending is wild. Also, the third book in the series — Onyx Storm — is being published in early 2025, so it’s going to be a busy time for Fourth Wing fans!

2. When The Moon Hatched by Danielle Jenson

In the book mood for a spellbinding and immersive romantasy with rich word building, dragons, and a high-stakes romance? Look no further with When The Moon Hatched. The book is like Fourth Wing, but more high fantasy with a complex setting.

Set in a world where dragons used to roam, but now are just tombstones in the sky. Reave is an assassin for a rebellion group and her job is to complete orders and never get caught. However, when a rival bounty hunter comes into the picture, everything is turned upside down and Reave is imprisoned by a group of powerful fae who plan to use her as a political statement.

Meanwhile, heartbroken by the loss of his love, Kaan Vaegor fought his way to the crown. Forever stuck trying to mend his heart, Kaan is summoned to the prison by a clue where he discovers Reave and there’s more to their story than what meets the eye.

While I’ve heard the dragons have a lesser focus (at least in the first book), the forbidden romance is just as tension-filled as the romance in Fourth Wing, making it a perfect book that is similar to Fourth Wing.

3. Spark Of The Everflame by Penn Cole

If you loved the enemies to lovers aspect of Fourth Wing, may I present you with a similar book — Spark Of The Everflame

In the world that is controlled by gods and their cruel offspring called the Descended, Diem daydreams escaping her village. With her mother’s unexpected disappearance and the discovery of old secrets, Diem goes to the dark royalty of the Descended to uncover the web of secrets left by her mother.

Diem must navigate the new world with the heir keeping a close eye on her and the rebellion group trying to recruit her.

Spark Of The Everflame is part of a four book romantasy series. The book is like Fourth Wing since it is filled with political intrigue, self-discovery, and dragon-like creatures!

4. Fear The Flames by Olivia Rose Darling

If you loved how Violet and Xaden reluctantly worked together while at their time at the war college, Fear The Flames is a book like Fourth Wing in that regard, and of course there’s dragons!

As a child, Elowen was taken away from her dragons and imprisoned by her father who is the King of Imirath. After years of being locked away, Elown is ready to seek vengeance for her secret kingdom and free her dragons, even if that means aligning herself with the commander of Vareveth, Cayden, who is the most dangerous and feared man of all the kingdoms.

Cayden promises to help Elowen, as long as she supports Vareveth against Imirath. Although they are reluctant allies with differing motives, Elowen cannot deny their growing attraction. While the two are scheming together, the war is imminent, making the heist to take back Elowen’s dragons a bit more difficult. However, Elowen will stop at nothing to get revenge.

Described as a reluctant allies to lovers romantasy, filled with quests, dragons, and a cast of likable characters, making Fear The Flames the perfect book to read after Fourth Wings.

5. So Let Them Burn by Kamilah Cole

So Let Them Burn is a Jamaican-inspired fantasy that explores one’s loyalty to their homeland and a sisterly bond. If you specifically loved the dragons of Fourth Wing and want to read about dragons in a different perspective, then So Let Them Burn may be the perfect option, as the book is similar to Fourth Wing in that way.

Faron is a legend. She can channel power from the gods and five years ago she used her magic to liberate her island from the dragon-riding Langley Empire. However, now at seventeen, she’s at a loss. She still has powers but nowhere to put them to use.

Faron is forced to attend an international peace summit where she expects to perform tricks, however, what she doesn't expect is her sister Elara making a bond with an enemy dragon, or the gods telling her the only way to break the bond is to kill her sister.

Desperation takes Faron down a dark path to find a solution, while Elara discovers secrets of the Langley Empire, resulting in both of them making difficult choices that will change their lives and the world.

While this book is not a romantasy, it’s an action-packed fantasy that is like Fourth Wing.

6. The Priory of The Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

The Priory of The Orange Tree is a feminist and thought-provoking epic fantasy. While the book is not a romantasy novel, the book is similar to Fourth Wing with the inclusion of dragons into the story. If you want to read a fantasy book that is more focused on the fantasy and plot, then this book is for you!

For the past thousand years, The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys. Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter in order to protect the realm, but assassins are approaching closer and closer.

Ead Duryan is an outsider. She has worked her way into the court as a lady-in-waiting and part of a hidden group of mages. Secretly, she is protecting Sabran with her forbidden magic.

Meanwhile, Tané has been training to be a dragonrider, but forced into making a choice that could change everything.

When the East and the West refuse to parlay, an ancient chaotic force is awoken.

If you want a fantasy book like Fourth Wing but that has more dragons, political intrigue, and magic, then The Priory of The Orange Tree is for you.

7. Fireborne by Rosaria Munda

Described as “Game of Thrones meets Fourth Wing in a debut young adult fantasy that's full of rivalry, romance . . . and dragons,” which makes Fireborne the perfect book like Fourth Wing

When Annie and Lee were children, a revolution broke out, giving everyone a chance to test the governing class of dragonriders.

Now they are both rising stars. After Annie’s lowborn family is executed by dragonfire and Lee’s aristocrats were murdered by revolutionaries, both were raised in an orphanage and grew to be rivals as they are fighting to be the top position in the dragon riding fleet.

When the survivors of the old regime rise up and seek revenge, everything changes.

With war on the horizon, Annie and Lee must decide: should Lee kill the last of his remaining family or stand up with what he believes in, or should Annie protect the boy she loves or rise up to be the savior.

Although I have yet to read Fireborne, in my opinion, it sounds the most similar to Fourth Wing with training dragon riders, political war, and rivaling love interests.

8. Fire With Fire by Destiny Soria

If you want a book like Fourth Wing but is a stand-alone, then Fire With Fire may be the perfect book for you!

Although sisters — Dani and Eden Rivera — were born to kill dragons, they couldn't be more different than one another. Dani lets dragon slaying take the back seat and focuses on school, whereas Eden's entire life is dedicated to training. However, they can agree that it’s kill or be killed when dealing with dragons.

Of course, the agreement does not stick, when Dani makes a rare and magical bond with a dragon. As Dani gets to know Nox, she begins to question everything she has learned about dragons. In an attempt to save her sister, Eden turns to the mysterious sorcerers to help.

Now on opposite sides of the conflict, Dani and Eden will do anything to save one another. While fighting fire with fire, there is an enemy waiting in the shadows.

Fire With Fire is another book on this list that explores sisterhood, as opposed to romance. However, don’t let that deter you away from this book.

9. Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

If you ever wondered “what if the main character was a dragon,” then may I present you with Seraphina. The dragons and political warfare is similar to Fourth Wing, making it the perfect book to read when you are in the mood for books like Fourth Wing.

Seraphina is unique. She is half-dragon on her mother’s side. Her mother has since turned human and her father just simply doesn't care about Seraphina.

In her world, dragons and humans work together, however under the surface tension and hostility are growing. Seraphina keeps her true self under wraps, until a member of the royal family is murder, and she is thrust into the spotlight alongside Prince Lucian.

Together, Seraphina and Lucain discover a plot that would destroy their peaceful kingdom. On the other hand, Seraphina is struggling to keep her identity a secret and the discovery of who she is could cost her own life.

10. To Shape A Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose

A coming of age novel that is both cozy and intriguing, To Shape A Dragon’s Breath needs to be your next read. It’s a book like Fourth Wing because of the importance of dragons in the plot, but it expands further upon assimilation, resistance, and the relationship between colonizers and those who are colonized.

On the remote island of Masquapaug, no one has seen a dragon for years. Until one day, Anequs finds a dragon egg and bonds with its hatchling. The town is joyful and Anequs is revered as Nampeshiweisit, meaning a person who is in a unique relationship with a dragon.

Unfortunately, the Anglish conquerors of the town have different opinions. They want to control how the dragon is raised and who should be raising them, and Anequs does not fit their requirements. With reluctance, they allow Anequs to attend an Anglish dragon school where if she doesn’t succeed, her dragon will be killed.

Everything is different. With a non-Anglish upbringing, brings on challenges for Anequs, however she is determined to do whatever she needs to help her dragon, except becoming the expected meek Anglish girl.

As Anequs and her dragon are becoming powerful, they realize the world needs changing and they might be the only ones who can change it.

11. Eragon

Arguably, the most popular book about dragons — Eragon

Fifteen year old Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the moods. While Eragon thinks he is just a lucky farm boy who found a stone, he is soon surprised to discover that the stone brings a dragon hatchling that thrusts him into a legacy that is as old as the Empire.

Immediately, his life is forever changed. Eragon is swept away by magic and power. Gifted with a sword, a dragon, and sage advice, he can either save or destroy the Empire.

Although Eragon was published long before Fourth Wing, time brings upon a generation of new readers. It’s a book like Fourth Wing because of dragons (or I guess you could say Fourth Wing is a book like Eragon), making it the perfect next book for you to read to feed into your dragon obsession.
